Sonogram

We have watched your coming hence

Since your rising from the sea.

We have traced your form and shape

And tracked the speed of your approach

With wise and careful machines.

We saw you breach horizon,

A small cloud like a man’s hand

Even as we watch from shore,

You quicken, and increase, and

Silently flicker with storm.

Three things the sonar told us

With its murky scrying there

Your shape, and the life in it

And the date of your landfall

We know nothing else of you.

Only that you come to us

You, unknowing and unknown

Mystery out of mystery come

To break our hearts and lay us bare

And to ruin us with joy.
